Chris Szuter takes 1st - Nauers
raise $4,700.00 in Shelbi Martin Pool Tournament! Holiday seasons
seem to bring out the best in people. The plight of Shelbi Martin and a
benefit pool tournament proves pool players are not exempted. Shelbi Martin,
age 4, of Perry Township is fighting a courageous battle with brain cancer.
She has lost her hair and vision but not her infectious smile or heart-felt
support. Former GCABA Player of the Year Doug Nauer and his spouse Debbie
decided to join the county wide support and possibly raise a few dollars
through a pool tournament. Those that know Doug realize he is passionate
about everything he does. He is a winner in every sense of the word. He
doesn’t settle for second place so it’s no surprise he championed still yet
another event.
Professional pool player and 2007 GCABA Added Open Event
Champion, Chris Szuter, pledged Shelbi any winnings he might receive weeks
before the event ever took place. Chris, playing with his trademark cool, won
the event without losing a match aided by a few timely misses by his
opponents. And Chris, good to his word, donated the $168.00 1st
place prize money back to help Shelbi’s cause. To the delight of Doug &
Debbie Nauer, 2nd (Bob
Wartluft), 3rd (Rich
Burkhartd) and 4th (Mark
Boros) followed suit by donating their prize money back as well. In
addition, the host for this event Fiddlestix Billiard Café, donated the table
time collected totaling $180.00 and the McKinley Eagles donated $2,000.00. What more can be
said about 2007 Player of the Year candidate Steve Helline and his son, Joe
Helline? A future force to be reckoned with on the green felt, Joe donated
the sale proceeds of a computer totaling $450.00. But you would have to go
all the way back to a GCABA banquet ceremony in October when Jim Wayne set
the tone for this event by donating his share of 50/50 winnings totaling
$154.00 and Carl Slackford pledged his poker winnings totaling $60.00. Home
Several others also donated money including: K-Chrome
($100.00), Vince Johnson – Four Star Mfg ($100.00), Owen Cheyney (64.50),
Chris Cheyney ($7.00), Doug Nauer ($100.00), Smucker’s Employees ($30.00),
Mario Celetti ($25.00), Duane Lambes ($20.00), John Woodell
($20.00), Peter Park ($20.00), Susan Stegal
($20.00), Dick Moecia ($20.00), Charlene ($10.00), Bill ($5.00), Jack
Dusick ($10.00), 50/50 ($129.00), Calcutta ($73.00), No Show Signups
($160.00), Silent Auction & Gift Certificates ($500.00).
Gift Certificates used in a silent auction were donated by Fox &
Hound, Olive Garden, Red Carpet Car Wash, Macaroni Grill, Fisher Foods,
Mallonn’s Grill, TGIF Fridays, Scoreboard Sports Pub, Bob Evans, Tozzi’s,
Marscotti’s Pizza, Papa John, Mama Guzzardi’s , Vocelli Pizza, Tim Clark
Charter FishingTrip and Sanctuary Golf Course.
Tournament winners were 1st, Chris Szuter ($168.00); 2nd,
Bob Wartluft ($126.00); 3rd,
Rich (Richie) Burkhardt ($111.00);
4th, Mark Boros
($42.00). Though Shelbi is sight impaired, she sees every player as a champion that participated in this event.
The Nauers thank everyone
for their support and generousity . GCCBA wishes Shelbi a speedy and
heart-felt recovery and kudos to the Nauers for running this wonderful event.
